The first edition of Blockchain Open Forum Seoul closed on Friday June 29th.   Heads were up high about the future of blockchain, not only in Korea but globally.

The 2-day event which opened on Thursday, June 28 at GS Tower AMORIS in Seoul.  It brought together world-class thought leaders and expert speakers from across the blockchain and cryptocurrency ecosystem.

The event was hosted by TokenPost and EconoTimes.  The 2018 blockchain Open forum aimed at highlighting the successful and innovative blockchain cases.  Furthermore, it offered valuable insights into the technology. In addition, it provided opportunity for firsthand companies and ICOs to network and explore opportunities into the future of blockchain.

Speakers and panelists included Brock Pierce from Bitcoin Foundation, Tim Draper from Draper Associates, Nix Nolledo from Xurpass, Sonny Kwon from TokenPost, Josh Fraser form Origin Protocol, Daniel Eom from Foresting, Ben Jodan from Stylo, Bowen Wang from DDEX and others — answered the hot questions in a warm discussion.

Daniel Eom, who is recently receiving much attention and expectation, introduced Foresting. The Electronic Times, Korea Software Industry Association and DeCentre co-hosted the the summer blockchain event on June 21 at the Grand Conference Room in COEX. The mission of the event is to touch the the present and future prospectives of blockchain. Cryptocurrency and blockchain are the central technology of the 4th industrial revolution.

In the forum, Korea University Professor Kim Hyung-Joong, DeCentre CEO Lee Dong-Hyeok, Foresting HQ CEO Daniel Eom, Borabit CTO Kang Dae-Gu and Director Kim Jae-Pil from Jienem shared their opinions with brief presentations.

B21 CEO Simon Pearson, Park Song-Ho from Bingo Music held speeches on crypto space. Later in the seminar they introduced blockchain-based business models in terms of SNS, distribution and entertainment. Despite a series of long lectures, more than 200 blockchain enthusiasts attended the scene with an active participation.

Discussion on the blockchain prospectives

Kim Hyung-Joong, a professor at the Graduate School of Information Security of Korea University, had a chance to look at the history and future of cryptocurrency.

“In the near future, we will see people to win the Nobel Prize for their encrypting skills”,

he said with optimism about the industry’s potential for development. With a high probability, a variety of services based on cryptography will dramatically change our lives. Additionally, he defined the cryptography as a ‘bank’ per se.

“This is because transactions can be made without having to go through a bank by using a crypto applications. Currently, there are about 2 billion people in the world who do not have an access to banks. Crypto coins can give them a chance to trade. Moreover, a blockchain economic system is also a positive factor. “

On the other hand, there are tasks to be solved. In particular, there have been cases where the government failed to disclose ICO. Kim said,

“Since the market is still in its infancy, there are a few cases of conflicts with the related laws.”

Lee Dong-Hyuk, CEO of DeCentre, explained about crypto fund, a fast growing trend in investment sector. Crypto fund is a fund that designed for directing the capital towards companies that seek to attract investment in the ICO market. Crypto funds reduce the risk while investing in ICO. Lee also described how investors can have discount priority and can analyze their investments more closely.

“The perception of the encrypted currency is gradually changing into the concept of stocks. This indicates that there would be a stable process in current markets that were overheated earlier. The emergence of crypto funds is a vital part of this process“.

New Generation of social network platforms

CEO Daniel Eom introduced Foresting HQ, a social networking platform based on the decentralized blockchain. Unlike previous social networking sites that have to depend solely on ad revenue, this concept is a brand new business model. It can generate primary profits through uploaded contents. Steemit claims as the first generation platform of blockchain technology. However, Foresting has secured its competitive edge by overcoming the weaknesses of Steemit.

Kang Dae-Gu gave a quick introduction upon the innovative trading model CoinDTS developed by Borabit. It is the first HTS transaction solution in South Korea that enables more than 120 altcoins. 

Kim Jae-Pil proposed a business model that applies blockchain system to travel industry.  He explained,

“By combining blockchain with travel industry, we will be able to provide consumers with unique experiences and information that is more reliable than ever.”

In the later sessions of the event, Simon Pearson drew attention by introducing an encryption asset investment model. Park Sung-Ho, Head of Bingo Music Team, presented a model for sound distribution based on blockchain. Bingo Music is going to be launched next year with a solution to the transaction transparency and copyright issues of the existing music platforms.

A blockchain technology was referred to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies once it was introduced in 2008. In addition, it is growing faster and faster by embracing a larger space of industry and service, such as social networks and financial services.  The following list contains top 10 influencers in blockchain industry, however, the list is not ranked in order of importance. Satoshi Nakamoto is considered as the creator of bitcoin by the majority and there is a lot of mysteries surrounding his identity. Therefore, he is not listed here since he was never seen in real life and even was not heard of yet. Maybe he is a real person or not, the list starts without him.

Adam Back is a British programmer, cryptographer, and crypto-hacker. He has made significant researches on e-cash protocols since 1995. His inventions of hashcash and proof-of-work system are handy manuals for several anti-spam systems. Hashcash is designed to combat blog spams and namespace pollution. Adam is the CEO of Blockstream, a company that seeks further development of bitcoin and blockchain technology.

Patrick Byrne

Patrick Byrne is an American entrepreneur, e-commerce pioneer and CEO of Overstock.com, an e-retailer giant. In January 2014, Overstock was the first major retailer to welcome bitcoin payments for its products long before Microsoft and Dell came along. He has an MA degree from Cambridge University and a Ph.D. from Stanford University. Patrick is an amazing sportsman too. He has a taekwondo black belt and a professional boxer. Roger Ver is the “Bitcoin Jesus”, an American entrepreneur running his business in Tokyo, Japan. He is the first person to make initial investments in bitcoin startups. Being a prominent bitcoin supporter, he promotes Bitcoin Cash, a hard fork of the cryptocurrency – an intent to reduce transaction time and fee. In 2012, Ver helped the Bitcoin Foundation with a large amount of donation and the Foundation of Economic Education with 1 million dollar worth of bitcoins.

Vitalik Buterin

Vitalik Buterin, a Canadian-Russian programmer, is the co-founder of both the Ethereum project and Bitcoin Magazine. This 24-year-old genius boy is the youngest on the list. His cryptocurrency is worldwide number 2 in terms of transaction volume. Buterin learned about bitcoins at the age of 17 from his father. He was listed in Fortune’s 40 under 40 in 2016, and Forbes 30 under 30 in 2018.
