Cashmallow

Korean Startup Cashmallow offers a minimal 1% service charge for all currency exchanges.  Furthermore, users will be able to exchange currencies anywhere and anytime via their mobile phones.  They offer 7-day customer support.  They also have affiliate stores where you can apply for cash withdrawal.  Local currencies are withdrawn without additional service fees.  Lastly, Cashmallow users can pay with a QR code scan at no extra charge.

Therefore Cashmallow offers the most economical way to exchange currency.  Currently, they are serving Korea and Taiwan but already have plans to expand to Hong Kong, Japan, Vietnam, Philippines, and Singapore.

Keys to Winning at Runway to RISE Seoul:

  • They will need to show how easy it is to set up and use.
  • Graphs that show how much money users will save.
  • Show their plans to expand to other markets.

Breakdown:

It is be crucial for the team to show how easy it is to use the Cashmallow app.  They will need to show the user experience from depositing the money and then exchanging the money on the mobile app.  To show this to the judges they might need to tell a story, a person travel to Korea or to Taiwan.  Simple graphs showing the amount of money saved will also be helpful.  Lastly, they need to show how their app is doing in Taiwan and how they will expand to Hong Kong, Vietnam, Philippines, and others.  In addition, they should also talk about their interest in the European and American markets.

Open Education Korea

Korean Startup Open Education Korea is an online and offline edu-game development company. They create, develop and sell games to teach fundamental skills, language, and coding. Open Education’s online products create an interactive classroom on the go, no previous language knowledge is needed. In addition, their offline products encourage listening, speaking and reading comprehension and face-to-face reinforcement of learned material both inside and outside the classroom.

Their best game might be Pooks an online/offline language game for the whole family.  Another interesting game is their coding puzzle game called Kindy Koding.  The game teaches kids the fundamentals of coding as well as valuable life and academic skills.  Kids will need to move around obstacles and barriers by using directional commands.  The quicker and more efficient the code, the more points they will earn.

Keys to Winning at Runway to RISE Seoul:

  • Focus on the importance of educating children not only in Korea but all across Asia.
  • Talk about the desire to expand to other markets.
  • Showcase Kindy Koding as well as Pooks.

Breakdown:

Open Education will need to show the judges that they are not just a Korea focused startup.  Teaching English through online games can be applied to any other country.  Therefore, Open Education has the potential to be a truly global company.  Furthermore, they need to show that they are looking to expand outside of Korea and the steps they need to take to get there.  There might be not enough time to showcase all their games but it would be wise to showcase Kindy Koding as the need for developers are in such high demand.  Getting kids interested in coding at a young age is something many parents will start looking into very soon.  Pooks their online/offline language game should also be included.

RISE is Coming to Korea

RISE is coming to Korea for the FIRST time!  They are partnered with 500v2 to organize Runway to RISE Seoul a pitch competition to bring one Korean startup to compete against startups from Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, Singapore, and Bangkok at RISE Hong Kong.  Which Korean startup will win Runway to RISE Seoul and represent Korea at RISE?  We will find out June 14th at Google’s Campus Seoul.

Who Will Represent South Korea at RISE?

For those that don’t know about RISE, RISE is one of the biggest tech conferences in Asia.  RISE is produced by the team behind Web Summit which is regarded as the largest tech conference in the world.  In addition, over 15,000 attendees will be going to RISE.  That number could increase as RISE has expanded their RISE promotion all across Asia.  Runway to RISE, a pitch competition, will be held in many cities across Asia including Seoul.  Local Korean startups will battle it out on-stage at Google’s Campus Seoul for a chance to pitch at RISE’s BREAKTHROUGH stage.  Furthermore, the winner of the BREAKTHROUGH Stage will go to Web Summit in November.

Runway to RISE Seoul

Runway to RISE Seoul will NOT be just a pitch competition.  There will be panel discussions regarding the Greater Bay Area (Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Zhongshan, Dongguan, Huizhou, Jiangmen, and Zhaoqing) and the Korean Startup ecosystem.  In addition, there will also be drinking and a chance to network with not just the Korean startup community but the Greater Bay Area community that will be flying in just for this event.  Korean startups interested in the Hong Kong startup ecosystem should make the trip to RISE because they really do a great job of incorporating Hong Kong’s co-working spaces.  The organizers of RISE hold small events in many of Hong Kong’s 75 co-working spaces across the city to promote them to the world.  There are also many “bar crawls” that make RISE one of the most fun conferences for networking in the world.

Startups Need to Apply Before May 31st

Startups looking to pitch at the event can apply at www.r2riseseoul.com.  Even if you are not looking to pitch this event, it will be great for networking and meeting other entrepreneurs in the startup scene.  There are only 150 tickets available.  Therefore make sure to buy yours now.  If you have not secured your ticket, don’t worry you will be able to watch the event on Facebook Live.  There you can cheer for your favorite startup!

Runway to RISE Seoul

If you ask most Korean startups or startups in general, they will tell you that the most challenging aspect of starting a startup is finding investments.  Raising capital can be time-consuming.  In addition, many don’t know where to start.  It is very difficult to get your startups name out there.  Therefore, Founders need to be very active and take every opportunity they can to meet as many investors as possible.  Runway to RISE Seoul will be one of the best opportunities for Korean startups to expand their network of investors.  Startups can grow their network not only in Korea but in Hong Kong and China as well.  Runway to RISE takes place June 14th.  All the information can be found on www.r2riseseoul.com.  Korean startups looking to apply for Runway to RISE Seoul please follow the link here.

500v2 will be hosting the Runway to RISE Seoul event.  Furthermore, 500v2, Web Summit, and Startup Radar will be looking to do more startup events in Seoul in the future.

Meet Investors

Many startups join pitch competitions not just for the prizes but also for the connections.  Runway to RISE Seoul will be live streamed on Facebook so Korean startups will not just be pitching to local investors at the event but to tens, if not hundreds of VCs and Angel investors.  You just need to catch the eye of just ONE of these investors and it would have made the event a success for your startup.

The winning team will have access to RISE’s mentor/investor database and will be able to request investor meetings at RISE Hong Kong.

Form Partnerships

This is a great opportunity to meet other startup founders who you can connect with, share ideas, ask questions, and even form partnerships.  There will be speakers from The Greater Bay Area for startups looking to expand out of Korea and into China or Hong Kong.

500v2, Web Summit, RISE, and Startup Radar hope all Korean startups apply to this pitch competition before June 1st.  The Web Summit team and 500v2 team will then select 8 startups.  Then those 8 lucky Korean startups will participate in the pitch competition at Google’s Campus Seoul on June 14th!
