Korean Startup Genesis Lab

The future of AI will be the ability to read emotion.  Korean startup Genesis Lab makes it possible for machines to communicate with humans.  They are looking to master emotion recognition technology through three steps.

Step 1

Visual information is the most important feature to understand emotion.  This is why Genesis Lab focuses a lot on facial expressions.

Step 2

We use voice emotion recognition because during the conversation the mouth moves.

Step 3

As technology evolves, adding heartbeats and brainwaves in the future will help in fully understanding emotions.

Genesis Drive

There are many opportunities with this technology that can be impactful for businesses and society in general.    This is why they created Genesis drive which can detect drowsiness, distractions, and negative emotions of drivers quickly and accurately.

How it works

For drowsiness, they use what is called eye blink frequency along with eye closure rate.  So if you drive and if you are fighting sleepiness, your frequency will decrease.  For distractions, we use head poses, which means if your head is outside a certain range an alarm will sound.  For negative emotions we are able to capture anger by recognizing angry, screaming, or disgusted faces which in many cases related to road rage.

Genesis Insight

Another product from Genesis Lab is called Genesis insight which is a nonverbal behavior analysis tool for job seekers to measure and improve their communication skills.  At the same time, they are gathering our video conversational data for their voice emotion recognition.

Last year they were able to get funding from Blue Point Partners one of the leading tech investors in Korea.  In addition, they were able to secure two R&D funds from Korean government agencies which allowed Genesis Lab to co-research with KAIST.  This year they were able to collaborate with Hyundai Mobis to for better in-demand mobility technology innovations.  Genesis Lab was chosen among over 150 applicants because of their AI technology that changes interior lighting and music upon analyzing the driver’s emotions as well as prevention from sleepiness and drunk driving.

Look for Genesis Lab at CES 2019, as Hyundai Mobis looks to set up a venue to exhibit their latest technologies.

It is great to see conglomerates like Hyundai Mobis partnering with startups and forming synergies for innovation.
